Coastal and Marine Management Program

Under the Coastal and Marine Management Program (CaMMP), which was initiated in March 2001, a range of projects is envisaged in the area of coastal and marine management. Emphasis will be placed on the human dimensions of coastal and marine management, with due attention to policy, science and technology. The projects will be carried out in several countries of the Wider Caribbean region. See CaMMP brochure (PDF)

Projects may fall into, but are not limited to, the following categories:

  • Co-management and community-based management of fisheries and coastal areas
  • Coordination and capacity building for sustainable stakeholder organisations
  • Governance and institutional arrangements for marine protected and adjacent areas
  • Appropriate technology for resource user participation in sustainable management
  • Information and perspectives on marine policy and multilateral environmental agreements
  • Involvement in regional or sub-regional fisheries management and planning processes
  • Enhancement of livelihoods in coastal communities through economic and other linkages
  • Assessments of coastal and marine resources, and the economic activities that utilise them
  • In developing and executing CaMMP, it is planned to establish partnerships and collaborative arrangements with local and regional NGOs, governments, academic and research institutions and fisher groups with similar and/or complementary interests in coastal and marine management. This will strengthen the NGO network within the Caribbean. It is also our intention to involve, where possible, existing Caribbean Conservation Association members (countries, organisations and individuals) in projects that are developed by the CaMMP in order to reinforce the benefits of membership in the CCA. Funds for implementing the projects will be sought from agencies, donors and benevolent foundations internationally.

CaMMP has three Senior Program Officers, Dr. Robin Mahon, Dr. Patrick McConney and Dr. Robert Pomeroy, all of whom have a wide range of technical and scientific expertise, and experience, in coastal and marine matters in the Caribbean and many other locations worldwide.

A major project under CaMMP's is the Coastal Resources Co-management Project (CORECOMP), being implemented in collaboration with the World Resources Institute (WRI) with funds from the Oak Foundation.
