CARIBWA PAGE
25th & 26th August 2000
This was the scenea the inaugural meeting of the Caribbean & Western Atlantic Association of Marine & Aquatic Educators (CARIBWA 2000).
All participants came to the conference with teaching resources and activities that they had found useful in their classes. Most resources where ecology rather than issues based. Another regional resource pack currently under production covers mangroves under the flag species of the West Indian Whistling Duck. This educational pack will be aimed at upper secondary to tertiary students.
Conference participants also discussed how CARIBWA will operate and how its existence will support members to achieve their goals as marine educators. One of the major requests was for educators to be able to link to resources on the web & possibly download printable resources for use in their classes. In this light a CARIBWA website should be formed and in the short term, CCA offered to host a CARIBWA page on their website. This page is the result of this co-operation and we invite CARIBWA members to send info for making links on this page & distributing news about our work. The conference was supported by RAMSAR and the participants were given a great deal of information as well as a 20 minute video concerning the convention and its goals. This will be useful for media community in every country to which the participants returned with renewed energy and unity. Many thanks to Martin Keeley of the Mangrove Action Project and his assistants from The Brac for organising this conference & the associated field trips.....the diving certainly was AMAZING!!! CARIBWA operates through a listserve. Contact Martin if you want to join! |
